Been having a blast with HomeKit and Homebridge lately. I couldn't fall asleep the other night, and hacked together a plugin for my BBQ controller. Home automation with meats! 🐷🔥 https://github.com/cleverdevil/homebridge-stoker Note: its entirely untested.
When you have a meeting with @bencherian http://share.cleverdevil.io/CoPaTmP2iA.png
Yay, welcome @donmelton to Micro.blog!
Instagram’s decline is finally complete. Timeline is out of order, obnoxious ads, random suggestions cluttering the timeline, distracting Snapchat-like features, and tons of follower spam. Instagram is dead. Photoblogs, you can return now!
On a related note, Micro.blog is already shaping up to be a lovely platform for sharing and viewing photos. In order. Without ads. Sunlit 2.0 should make it even better. Now, I just need to make my CMS work better with both 😀
Ertz caught the ball and took like 3 steps before breaking the plane. That's an easy call. 🏈
Yes! Good job, Eagles. Thank you for keeping the Pats from winning another Super Bowl. 🏈
Power outage for miles surrounding LAX, including my office. Great start to the work week. Sigh.
I’m currently a Hulu Live user, but am evaluating YouTube TV this week. The user experience on both is pretty awful. Quality isn’t great, either. YouTube TV has the price and feature advantage. Hulu the content advantage.
I’m absolutely flabbergasted as to how Apple doesn’t have a competitive offering in the space. A skinny, over the top bundle with Apple’s user experience would be much preferable to the current options.
I read two HomePod reviews: The Verge and iMore. Very different perspectives. I'm convinced that I'll want one, but only when they fix a few of the software issues: 1. Differentiate between voices for privacy/security. 2. AirPlay 2
As much as the tech press will knock HomePod for its lack of integrations compared to the Echo and Google Home, I think they miss that there are people who prefer Apple's approach to privacy. Also: HomeKit is pretty damn good now.
I have upgraded homebridge-stoker to use virtual "Thermostats" for sensors on Stoker BBQ controllers, including the ability to push updates to target temps. Its especially nice in the free Elgato Eve iOS app 😀 - https://github.com/cleverdevil/homebridge-stoker
"Hey Siri, set my Big Green Egg Cooker to 225 degrees." "Hey Siri, what's the current temperature of my Big Green Egg Meat?" Now, its possible, and I am seriously considering a HomePod again as a little reward to myself 😀
It’s not complicated. The GOP has to pander to their super rich donors in the form of overly aggressive tax cuts, but their constituents, and the majority of the nation honestly, want them to spend to provide services like Medicare. https://twitter.com/axios/status/961801310369705985
This is the logical conclusion of a system where dollars have more of a voice than people do. Fix that, and many other issues go away.
Smalltalk is an incredible programming language, and I wish it was in more widespread use, especially for user-facing apps. I’m looking at you, Apple. Smalltalk would have been much better than Swift for apps. https://twitter.com/awbjs/status/961289784952897541
Sigh. In spite of paying nearly two grand in COBRA premiums, on time, my health insurance isn’t working. Provider’s phone number is a voice mailbox with 48 hour response. Our system is dumb. #HeallthcareIsAHumanRight
While I think a Gallery object would be nice, eventually, I am not convinced that its necessarily the best way to go here. Its my understanding that pretty much all Entities support attachments, so doing it in the near-term in a more cross-cutting way would enable any type of post created via Micropub that contains multiple attachments to elegantly display the images.
I've decided to stop syndicating certain types of content to Micro.blog, including Checkins, Replies, and Likes, in favor of keeping those exclusively on my website. I think it'll make for a more pleasant experience for my followers 👍🏻
I will still be syndicating reposts, but I'm going to be more diligent about only reposting content that I think is genuinely interesting and useful to share.
No. No no no no no. Bad Google! https://thenextweb.com/apps/2018/02/13/google-amp-gmail-interactive-email/
A lot of progress is happening on the Together project. Its shaping up to be an amazing Indie reader! New features include responsive design, read/unread tracking, "classic" view, and more. Great job, @grantcodes – https://cleverdevil.io/s/rbTFxamOAH.mp4
This morning, I stepped on the scale, and saw some good results. Great motivation to stay disciplined on my diet!
Listening to jazz standards on the HomePod and enjoying some freshly brewed coffee. The kids are peacefully playing in their playroom and it’s a beautiful day in SoCal. ☕️🏝
Attempting to add a simple composer to Together. Its been fun learning more React 😀
Awesome, I got the composer working in Together! Three cheers for me 🎉
Here is what the composer looks like in Together - https://cleverdevil.io/s/dTD1g7DnJV.mp4
I thought we may make it through the flu season, but William woke up this morning and proceeded to vomit everywhere. I’m still hopeful it’s not the flu. 🤢
Good news: William has stopped throwing up and is eating some Italian ice. Could we be this lucky?
Working on adding syndication for the composer in Together. I think I have it working now 😀
There was a strange bug with syndication before, but I believe I've also fixed it for both Likes and Reposts a well.
Just created a Lambda function that looks at my website's On This Day page, and publishes the memories to a special channel in my Microsub server. #IndieWeb #OwnYourMemories
Hey, cool. I can now post to my website via Hammerspoon :)
The proper responses to the question: Are you on Facebook? 1. No. 2. Unfortunately.
Disappointed that Coach Kool is leaving the ‘Canes. He has had such a positive impact on the program. I’d love to see Kevin Patrick replace him! 🏈
It’s 51°F in my neighborhood right now. The low tonight is 43°F! Yikes 🤭
I’ve finally discovered a clear path to leaving Facebook entirely. Looking forward to moving all of my historical content to my website, and then deleting Facebook.
Ads are UX pollution.
Public Service Announcement: HipChat’s iOS app is trash. That is all.
Hey, @culturedcode, the new automation capabilities in Things are amazing! Can we get the JSON bits as a web service, or maybe just via Email to Things?
I made myself a keto-friendly boiled custard for dessert tonight. I floated two meringues on top of the chilled custard. Delicious! Next time, I may make it into a pie with meringue crust.
For the curious, I used Sukrin brand sweetener, which is largely erithrytol with a touch of stevia. It’s quite nice. I used their brown sugar replacement to make a BBQ sauce and it’s quite satisfying.
Whew. Long and exhausting day. Is it the weekend yet?
Bug on iOS 11 / iPhone X: if you have a web-app added to your home screen, and then swipe left/right on the bottom of the screen to switch apps, it crashes everything and returns you to the lock screen.
Colette fell asleep in my arms on the couch and I may not move. Ever. #DaddysGirl #TrueLove
We need more pictures from your travels sir!
Another day, another pound lost. 💪🏻
I whipped up a quick API that I can HTTP POST @culturedcode's Things JSON data to, and an agent on my computer that uses the Things URL handler to send the data into Things. Thanks AWS, Lambda, SQS, and Python! #Automation
“Hey, Siri, what’s the latest news?” and “Hey, Siri, play the Subnet podcast” are my two favorite HomePod use cases in the morning.
I love native apps on macOS, but the friction you experienced with Swift is precisely why so many people turn to Electron. Hopefully, WWDC this year has some answers!
That's looking quite "lickable," Brent. Ah, the good ole' days!
A lot of noise about how Dropbox saved $75M over two years by moving off AWS. Most are missing that Dropbox has over $1.1B in revenue. That means that they're saving around 3% of their revenue annually. Much less impressive in context.
Also, because they now have their own infrastructure, Dropbox has to remain organizationally excellent at managing, deploying, and modernizing it. It potentially distracts from other things. Wise long-term bet? I'm not so sure.
FWIW, I am not saying that I think Dropbox made the wrong decision. I'm just not convinced on the prevailing narrative or the long-term viability. Also: the vast majority of businesses aren't Dropbox! Their scale is rare.
Been craving a low sugar cocktail. Muddled five blackberries in a glass and poured on bourbon (Larceny). Added ice. Tasty! 🥃
One of my favorite Instant Pot applications is chicken soup. Leftover rotisserie chicken, lots of fresh veggies and seasonings, and 30 minutes on high pressure, and you get a rich, chickeny soup! 🐔
