Note
I’ve landed on CasaOS for the server, sitting on top of Debian 12. I gave CasaOS, UmbrelOS, and Proxmox a try in VMs, and found CasaOS was the most balanced between ease of use and customization. Proxmox was overly complex and Umbrel too locked down.

Setting up the new home server. It comes pre-installed with Windows and I need to flash a thumb drive with Debian using the PC itself, as my office is currently occupied as a guest room. The first run Windows experience is insanely long! Filled with promos too.

All that being said, I'm absolutely convinced that Daylight is onto something. I would wager that they have a great chance of success as a screen technology vendor, but I'm highly skeptical that they will succeed in creating a long-lived consumer product. I'm rooting for them!

While DC-1 has a lot to offer, it isn't free of shortcomings. First, it's an Android device, and the Android tablet ecosystem is garbage compared to iPad OS, which has thousands of high quality apps. It's also eye-wateringly expensive considering it's essentially a mid-tier Android tablet.

I've had my Daylight DC-1 for a few weeks. DC-1 is a tablet with a screen similar to e-Ink, but at 60-120 fps. Its grayscale, but is a joy to write on with a EMR stylus, which requires no battery, It's usable in sunlight, has great battery life, and is the best e-reader I've owned. Lots to like.
