I’ve heard people whine about Canto Bight, and this is a great thread on why it’s important. Not every part of a movie has to advance the plot! Some parts exist to advance and develop the *characters*.

@colinwalker agreed! I do understand the complaint that the Canto Bight segment is too long, but cutting it out entirely would greatly diminish not only the movie, but also the future of Finn and Rose as characters.
@cleverdevil Absolutely, and it helps to set the ideas around the next generation of force users.
I get that, and that detail will be great in the book but for the movie? It's where you really lost lots of casual fans. For a movie with so much going on, combining rotj and empire already, that scene could have been dropped and it would have been easier to watch. Great movie.
@cleverdevil It almost feels to me as if it would have been better as its own heist movie Marvel-style.
Casual fans aren’t the ones complaining about Canto Bight. “Serious” fans are.
I really just keep seeing a lot of defending vs. previous movies
I think that is because Twitter didn't exist when the Ewoks were introduced.
Hah, precisely. Plenty of people complained about Empire, too! I’ll stand by my judgement of TLJ as a worthy entrant to the Star Wars series.
Worthy but flawed. Unusually, great character development in place of a flawed plot.
I agree with that assessment. Still makes my top three 😀
Also, reading @DelReyStarWars #CantoBight really breathes some life into the city and makes you appreciate it more. Clearly depth was lacking in the film, but the book makes it feel more alive and interesting than Mos Eisley. Fun read, like #FromACertainPOV

@cleverdevil I thought it made a great statement in itself but adding that context makes it even better.
