Medium will no longer support custom domains, now firmly cementing them as a content silo, and not a platform for publishers that wish to retain ownership of their content. Don't give your hard work and creative content to silos, folks.

Surprise level zero
@cleverdevil Wow. I haven't been following Medium very closely (at all), but this is surprising to me.
Wow, that is surprising
Is it? I've been telling people to avoid Medium for years because I figured this was inevitable.
I guess not really, but still takes some guts to mess over ppl like that
To be fair, they're not taking away the feature from customers who already have a custom domain. At least, not yet. I imagine that'll come eventually.
@cleverdevil This is interesting. I think this change actually happened a while ago, but I'm sure as Medium moves ever closer to being a completely paywalled silo it will become less easy or attractive for existing custom domains to remain.
I'm intrigued to see what happens with all the publications and companies that went all-in on Medium. Basecamp moved Signal v. Noise into Medium a couple of years ago. Interesting now to look back at the post announcing that move. Although the first sentence of this now seems ironic, I guess DHH is right that at least it shouldn't be too hard to migrate back out:
Medium has listened to the concerns of publishers. By offering custom domains, we’re ensured that no permalink ever has to break, even if we leave the platform. By committing to never showing advertisement, unless the publisher consents, we can remain with Basecamp as the sole commercial sponsor of Signal v. Noise. Between these two facts, we feel confident about owning our content and our legacy, regardless of where Medium-The-$82M-VC-Funded-Company goes.
