Kids have started dropping hints about getting a VR headset. Here’s the rub: there’s no chance in hell I’m giving my money or my kid’s eyeballs to Meta. Are there any standalone VR alternatives that don’t suck?

@jonathan I've got a few friends who've bought them used from ebay for this same reason. I bought mine new, but created fake user accounts with the help of https://thispersondoesnotexist.com/ and man oh man piracy is dead-easy with these things. This Person Does Not Exist

@jonathan I can also guarantee your kids will stop using it within three months (nobody does!) so easiest to just not bother in the first place!

I went searching for the one that we were considering for my kid, also asking these days - It's the Meta set, so thanks for the heads up, I honestly hadn't made the connection. I'm 100% with you, LaCour - No thanks! The Wirecutter recommends the $$$ HTC Vive Pro 2 Headset for PC.

@jonathan I bought the Valve one for my daughter, which avoids the Meta crap. But I also don’t see her using it much any more (haha, three months later! Just as your other reply predicted.)

@mpirnat I like Valve a lot and I absolutely adore my Steam Deck. My understanding is that the Valve Index requires a PC. My kiddos tried a friend’s cheap Oculus Go to play Beat Saber, and now that’s all they want to do. 😔
I am guessing that Brett is right – three months and then on the shelf.
