So, the iPod works, which is good. Lots of polish and buffing took out most of the scratches and it looks good too. New battery is on the way as is the final dongle in the chain.

@josh_____d a fresh new hard drive arrived from eBay over the weekend. Its only moving from 5 GB to 10 GB, as I am not clear if the 1st gen supports anything larger. I may buy a 30 GB drive from a slightly newer iPod and see if I can get it to work.
