Plex doubles down, then triples down

Bookmarked
The Verge Plex is tripling the price of a lifetime pass to $750 after doubling it last year | The Verge Plex is giving every prospective customer until July 1st to lock in a lifetime subscription at today’s rates — before it triples the price to a staggering $750.

On December 27, 2012, I paid Plex $74.99 for a lifetime subscription. Today, I received an email from Plex that they’re raising the price of the subscription to $749.99.

Thankfully, I’m set with my lifetime pass, and I have Jellyfin set up in case they ever try and pull the rug out from underneath their early adopters. (5/5)

I agree with The Verge’s take that this is a price designed to create a quick infusion of cash more so than a fair market adjustment. Plex is still great. But, the pivot into ad-supported streaming has been a detriment to my use case. (4/5)

At that price, you’d have to subscribe for 11 years (at the current annual rate) to make the lifetime sub worthwhile. 2026 Jonathan is very happy with 2012 Jonathan’s purchase. (3/5)

A little context here from The Verge. > Plex already more than doubled the price of a lifetime Plex Pass subscription from $119.99 to $249.99 last March, and it’ll triple again on July 1st to $749.99. (2/5)
